Found animals/pets are visible on the City of Torrance Website for 30 days.  Due to the lack of kenneling area, animals found by Torrance Animal Control can only be held at Animal Control for up to 5 days before being relocated to the LA County Shelter in Carson. Many animals found in Torrance are lost “stray” pets.

When an animal/pet comes into Animal Control, we check for a name tag, license tag and microchip. If the animal has any type of identification, the owner will be contacted right away.  Animals with current licenses or microchips with up-to-date information have a much higher chance of being reunited with their family.

Remember that Torrance Municipal Code (TMC 41.3.1) requires that any person that has, maintains, or harbors a dog in Torrance must obtain an annual license.

I Found a Lost Pet. Here are some things to do:

  • Check to see if the animal is wearing an ID tag. If so, you may be able to immediately contact the owner and return the pet to its owner. If the pet is wearing ID, but you are unable to immediately contact the owner, it is advised that you still report the found pet and search for a match on the pet locator websites provided here.
  • If you have found a pet, please contact Torrance Animal Control at 310-618-3850 to turn it in.
  • Get the animal scanned for a microchip. If the pet is not wearing an ID tag, the best course of action is to either take it to your local animal shelter or call a local veterinary clinic to scan the animal for a microchip. If the animal is chipped, the staff will be able to immediately look up the owner’s contact information, and the animal may already be reported as lost by the owner with the microchip company.
  • Although it may be tempting to keep a lost pet and try to find the owner yourself, it is essential that the animal be scanned for a microchip. Pets are stressed when they are away from the familiarity of their family and home.
  • Report the lost pet and search for a match on the pet locator websites provided on this page.
  • Create a FOUND PET flyer and post/distribute around your community and local area.
  • Share a FOUND PET flyer on social media platforms.
  • Don't Give Up! Someone is looking for their furry companion.
